The auto-lock bottom is a specific piece of engineering: four (sometimes six) bottom panels, each cut and scored so that when you fold the box up into shape, the panels slide past and interlock with each other, holding the base flat and closed without glue or tape. It's the mechanism behind a lot of boxes that get called different names depending on what's on top of them — a mailer with an auto-lock bottom and a tuck top, a retail box with an auto-lock bottom and a flap top, a shipping carton with an auto-lock bottom and nothing more than a closed top flap.
Because it's a mechanism rather than a full box style, the thing worth understanding on its own is the panel geometry — how many panels, how they're scored, and how tightly they're cut to interlock. Get that wrong and the base either won't fold into a locked position cleanly, or it locks but doesn't hold under weight. We size the panel cuts to your board weight before a production run, the same way we do for any other locking mechanism — this isn't a generic default across every box size.
How the Panels Actually Interlock
- Panel count: Standard auto-lock bottoms use four interlocking panels; some heavier-duty designs use six for added stability.
- The score lines: Each panel folds along a precisely placed score — too shallow and the panel won't fold flat, too deep and it weakens right where it needs to hold weight.
- The interlock cut: Small notches or tabs on adjacent panels that slide past each other and catch, holding the base flat once folded. This cut has to match your board thickness — the same cut behaves differently on kraft versus heavier corrugated.
- Load distribution: A correctly interlocked base spreads weight across all panels rather than concentrating it on one seam, which is why panel geometry matters more here than on a glued or taped bottom.
Where This Mechanism Gets Paired
- Auto-lock bottom + tuck top: The most common pairing for mailer and shipping boxes — see our Custom Tuck Top Boxes page for the closure side of this combination.
- Auto-lock bottom + flap top: Common on retail and gift boxes wanting a faster-assembly alternative to a fully tucked box — see our Custom Flap Boxes page.
- Auto-lock bottom + standard lid: Used when the top needs to be a separate lift-off lid rather than any flap or tuck style.
Materials & Finishes
Board options:
- Standard corrugated (single or double wall) — most common for auto-lock bottoms, since the fold needs to hold shape without extra support
- E-flute corrugated — lighter-duty version for smaller, lighter products
- White or kraft outer liner — for branded retail use rather than pure shipping
Finishing options:
- Full CMYK printing on the outer liner
- Matte or gloss lamination
- Panel geometry and interlock cut sized and tested against your specific board weight before production

Perfect For
- Any box style needing a fast, glue-free bottom assembly
- Mailer and shipping boxes (paired with tuck top)
- Retail and gift boxes (paired with flap top)

Why Choose Us
- Free design support — we size the panel cut and score depth to your board weight before your quote is finalized, since this is the part that fails silently if it's off
- No die or plate charges — custom panel geometry without setup fees
- Low minimum order quantities — test the interlock on a small run before committing to volume
- Samples available — fold and lock a sample base yourself before you commit; this mechanism should be felt, not just specified on paper
FAQs
How many panels does an auto-lock bottom actually use? Standard designs use four interlocking panels. Heavier-duty versions use six for added base stability under more weight.
Why would an auto-lock bottom fail under weight even if it looks locked? Usually the interlock cut was sized for a different board weight than what's actually being used — the notches need enough grip on the specific board thickness to hold under load, not just visually appear closed.
Can I pair an auto-lock bottom with any top style? Yes — it's independent of what's on top. It's most commonly paired with a tuck top for mailers, a flap top for retail boxes, or a standard lift-off lid.
Is an auto-lock bottom stronger than a taped bottom? When sized correctly for the board weight, yes — it distributes weight across all panels rather than relying on one taped seam. Sized incorrectly, it can actually be less reliable than tape.
Is there a minimum order quantity? We offer low minimum order quantities so you can test the panel fit before scaling to a full production run.
Do you offer eco-friendly auto lock box options? Yes — kraft and recycled corrugated are available for brands that want a sustainable packaging line.
