A sleeve box is a specific two-piece construction: an inner tray sized to hold the product securely, and an outer sleeve — open on one end — that slides over the tray to close it. Pulling the sleeve off is the whole opening motion. It's a deliberate middle ground between a basic single-piece box and a fully rigid hinged case: more presentation value than a standard tuck box, less cost and complexity than rigid construction.
The fit between tray and sleeve is what makes or breaks this product, the same way it does on a matchbox-style drawer construction — too loose and the sleeve slides off in transit, too tight and it's a fight to open. We size that tolerance to your board weight and tray dimensions specifically, since a sleeve box built for a light product and one built for something heavier need different clearance.
How a Sleeve Box Differs from a Standalone Sleeve
Our Custom Packaging Sleeves page covers the broader sleeve family — belly bands that wrap partway around a box, and sleeves that wrap directly around a product without an inner tray. A sleeve box is more specific: it always includes both pieces, tray and sleeve, working together. If you already have a box and just want an outer wrap for branding, that's a standalone sleeve. If you need the whole two-piece system built from scratch, that's a sleeve box.
Types
- Standard tray and sleeve: A rectangular tray holding the product, closed with a full-coverage outer sleeve — the most common format.
- Window sleeve box: A die-cut or clear PVC window in the sleeve, showing the product before it's even slid out.
- Insert tray sleeve box: A tray with a custom foam or die-cut insert, sized to hold jewelry, cosmetics, or delicate items securely in place.
- Two-tier sleeve box: A deeper sleeve covering a taller tray, for bundled or multi-item products.
Materials & Finishes
Board options:
- Kraft cardboard — natural texture, budget-friendly, common for both tray and sleeve
- White SBS board — clean base for full-color printing on the sleeve
- Rigid/chipboard tray — for heavier or premium products needing a sturdier inner tray
Finishing options:
- Full CMYK printing across the sleeve
- Matte, gloss, or soft-touch lamination
- Foil stamping and embossing on the sleeve
- Window cut-outs for product visibility
- Custom insert trays or foam slots

FAQs
What's the difference between a sleeve box and a packaging sleeve? A sleeve box always includes both the inner tray and outer sleeve as one system. A standalone packaging sleeve (covered on our Custom Packaging Sleeves page) wraps around an existing box or product without necessarily including a fitted inner tray.
Why does my sleeve keep sliding off, or feel too tight? It's a tolerance mismatch between the sleeve and tray for the board weight being used. We size this specifically to your product before production to avoid both problems.
Can a sleeve box have a window? Yes — a die-cut or clear PVC window in the sleeve is a common add-on, letting the product show through before it's even removed.
Is a sleeve box more expensive than a standard tuck box? Generally yes, since it's two pieces instead of one, but it's less expensive than a fully rigid hinged box while still delivering a more premium unboxing motion than a basic tuck box.
Is there a minimum order quantity? We offer low minimum order quantities so you can test the fit before scaling to a full production run.
Do you offer eco-friendly sleeve box options? Yes — kraft and recycled board are available for brands that want a sustainable packaging line.
